Public Works Contractors and Subcontractors: Alert! Be Registered or Be Penalized

The information below is posted on the Department of Industrial Relations Public Works web page.  If any of this is a surprise to you, you have not been keeping current on the additional rules regarding Public Works Labor Law.  Take time to learn how to bid Public Works jobs before you bid at, or check in with your local Builders Exchange.

IMPORTANT NOTICE to all contractors who bid on a public works project in California on or after March 1, 2015, or who were awarded such a project on or after April 1, 2015:  All DIR Public Works contractor registrations obtained before July 1, 2015, expired at the end of that fiscal year, on June 30, 2015. If you activated your registration on or after July 1, 2015, you do not need to renew. Your registration is valid through Jun 30, 2016.

  • Starting on January 1, 2016, the penalty for lapsed contractor registration (in addition to the $300 annual renewal fee) will increase from $300 to $2,000.
  • Please note that if you were registered last year and have not bid on or worked on any public works projects requiring registration on or after July 1, 2015, your registration has expired but is not lapsed, and you can renew for this fiscal year without incurring any penalties.
  • If you believe your PW contractor registration is active, we encourage you to:
    • Use the active contractor registration search tool to locate and confirm your active registration. (The best way to search is to fill out the just the registration number or the license number.)
    • If your registration does not come up, it may have expired or you may never have been registered, and you should visit the registration/renewal page.
